What is clinical decision support?

What the CDS category means for dental AI today — and how it differs from diagnostic AI.

In plain language

Clinical decision support (CDS) is AI that helps a clinician think more thoroughly, faster — by surfacing relevant prior history, suggesting questions to ask, or drafting documentation. CDS does not replace the clinician's decision.

Why it matters

Calling a dental AI product a "diagnostic AI" changes its regulatory category and its design responsibilities. Most products that ship today are CDS, even if their marketing copy is vaguer. Buyers should ask explicitly which one they are buying.

Faurenis's approach

Across every surface — Copilot, Scribe, Document Intelligence, Perio — Faurenis provides AI-assisted documentation and workflow support; its regulatory classification remains under qualified legal review. We do not return categorical diagnoses. We surface findings, suggest considerations, and draft documentation the clinician finalises.

Risks & safeguards

  • Confidence bias — clinicians may over-trust AI confidence scores; Faurenis uses grounding rather than internal probability for its score.
  • Automation bias on routine tasks — mitigated by visibility (every AI paragraph is badged) and by audit logs that record overrides.
  • Edge-of-scope drift — mitigated by explicit refusal patterns: Faurenis declines to return a diagnosis where a diagnosis would be the decision.
